SOCIAL EVENINGS Since the September speaker was away receiving an award, he could not give his talk. Our sincere thanks to Brian Dawson for bringing his talk forward a month. He quickly prepared pictures about The Broomway: an ancient footpath on Foulness Island. His aerial pictures illustrated the extent of the flat open expanses and waterways of Foulness. Octobers postponed September presentation ‘Travels with my Chicken’ by Martin Gurdon was well worth the wait. His account of his antics with his pet chickens was surprisingly amusing. On 19th November Fran Smith, from The Remus Horse Sanctuary, will talk on “The love-life of her animals.” We finish the year’s social programme with our Christmas Social
on 17th December. As usual a fish or chicken and chips supper with a glass
of wine and selection of desserts will be provided. |

ORBITUARIES He joined the then General Committee of the Society in 1968 becoming Chairman in 1982. In 1989 he took on editing the Newsletter in addition to the role of Chairman. One of his initiatives, now discontinued, was an annual long distance Society walk, of about 16-miles. The routes for these walks were arranged in conjunction with Norman Turner. He was also involved with the late Ted Wright, then Curator of the Cater Museum, accompanying him on an annual ‘know your town’ walk. An architect who worked for Essex County Council, he met Roy Mizen, another former Chairman for the Society, now a Vice President, at college. After retiring from the council he specialised in designing dialysis rooms for hospitals and private houses. During his time in Billericay he acquired an impressive knowledge of both its history and surrounding countryside, which he was only too willing to share with anyone interested. He spent much of his retirement tracing his own family tree, and also
for many others who requested his help. In Scotland he became an active
member of the McGregor Clan Society and was proud to be a flag bearer
at Clan Gatherings and meeting clan members from all over the world who
regularly attend such events. John James worked in the planning department of the Town Council with former Society Treasurer John Bath, then situated in 108 High Street. He was a member of both the Billericay Society and the Archaeological and Historical Society. He was very active in retirement researching and publishing items on several aspects of the history of the town, notably ‘The Lost Farms of Billericay.’ This fully indexed book of nearly 200 pages provides details of the farms and their occupiers that once reached almost to the High Street. He privately published it in hardback depositing copies in both Billericay Library and the Cater Museum. His other publications included leaflets on Mill Meadows, the 1901 Census, the High Street, Billericay in the Domeday Book and the Ralph Agas 1593 Survey of Great Burstead. His only daughter pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife. |

LETTERS On Wednesday 9th July I met up with Christopher Brown the Public Rights of Way Officer for Essex County Council. We met at Linda Gardens off Mountnessing Road Billericay, we discussed several issues relating to footpaths around Billericay, David Bremner asked me to raise two points regarding that Billericay Society did a survey of footpaths and byways about three years ago and did Essex County Council wants us to do another one, also as a Society we are willing to repair and maintain stiles around our area if materials such as wood nails cement could be provided. Christopher Brown stated that his budget has been cut by 49% this year
and monies are not available, which seems to fly in the face of the post
Olympics pledge to encourage people to get out in the country for exercise
and to keep fit, fat chance if the footpaths are overgrown and impossible
to get through with stiles broken or damaged from lack of maintenance. Bob Reeves On June 21st – 22nd 2014 Barleylands Farm held an event called
Armed Forces Day. This is the second time this event has been held here,
to raise awareness of what the Armed Forces past, present and future do
every day. There were many ground demonstrations by different organisations
such as the Air Cadet Band, The Blue Falcons Gymnastics Team and IMPS
Motor Cycle Display Team. There were also air displays by The Great War
Display Team their airplanes are all renovated World War 1 planes William Smith ( Age 16 ) |
WALKS As well as a social event our walks are for exercise. It is your responsibility to maintain contact with the leader. Hanging about waiting for lost walkers who amble along chatting spoils the walk. Will members wishing to join us for the post walk luncheon, to which they are most welcome, please inform walk leader so that you can be included in the seating arrangements. This should ensure walkers are not excluded from booked table settings. Close to the date of the walk, check with the walk leader, David, or our website, www.billericaysociety.co.uk for any changes. Since pubs are changing at a great rate walkers should make sure that the leader has your landline, or mobile phone number. Before setting out, please check the walks listing and note the walk or starting point. Most walks start at 10:00am on alternate Tuesdays and may cross stiles. Suitable clothing should be worn. Footwear should reflect the weather conditions and the state of the ground. No dogs please. If you use a pub car park please, at least, have a drink, if only a soft one. I will continue to give the Ordnance Survey grid reference (GR). For those who use GPS “sat-nav” equipment I will give the postcode, where known. Programme |
